Abigail Miller to teach at Holy Angels for Forum for Young Catechetical Leaders

2014 Sep 23

Abigail Miller of Fishers, IN, was commissioned for the Praxis experience portion of the Forum for Young Catechetical Leaders, a two-year catechist training program.

Over the course of the fall semester, seven Forum participants will teach catechesis at Holy Angels Parish in Dayton. Faith Formation instructors will share their expertise by mentoring students throughout the process.

Abigail was commissioned in a special ceremony during the afternoon liturgy Sept. 6, receiving a blessing from Father Bertrand Buby, S.M., and a mission cross to serve as a reminder of dedication to Christian discipleship.

During the daylong session, Forum participants discussed subjects such as "The Vocation of the Catechist" and "Pope Francis' Call for Missionary Discipleship" in preparation for their teaching experience. In addition, students learned how to construct age-appropriate lesson plans in Parish Faith Formation.

The Forum for Young Catechetical Young Leaders is sponsored by the University of Dayton's Institute for Pastoral Initiatives, Center for Catholic Education and the religious studies department. The Forum aims to prepare University of Dayton students to become outstanding catechetical leaders and religion teachers in Catholic Schools and parishes. Through this program, students have the opportunity to encounter regional and national leaders to move toward basic certification in religious education.

The University of Dayton is a top-tier, national, Catholic, research institution. Founded in 1850 by the Society of Mary (the Marianists), we focus on educating the whole person, connecting learning with leadership and service. Through student clubs, campus recreation, education abroad, research, service-learning and career preparation, students are encouraged to engage the world, developing a critical mind and compassionate heart.
